The Tranz Alpine travels from Coast to Coast, Chirstchuch to Greymouth and goes
through some of the south islands most scenic locations. Starting with the Canterbury
plans and its surrounding farmland, then through to the Waimakariri Rivers gorges
and river vallys. Continuing on you’ll climb the Southern Alps and then back
down into the West Coast’s rain forest.
The journey is 223.8 kilometers long taking about four and a half hours. Beginning
in the south islands largest city Chirstchurch, the journey also includes 16 tunnels,
and 5 viaducts, the Staircase being the highest at 73 meters.
Offering both one way seating and tabled group seating, the Tranz Alpine allows
you to experiece the views as well the company of others. There is also an open
air viewing carriage, offering a closer experience of the stunning scenery while
travelling.
The tranz alpine train departs Christchurch and Greymouth daily. Whether you are
